Does Granite date your kitchen?

There are many different types of counter surfaces, and a lot depends on: personal aesthetics, personal habits, functionality, budget, and the value of your house.

For example, if you have a large kitchen with multiple turns and try to use granite, you may have seams. Some people will instead opt for Corian or something similar. Granite might be overkill and actually appear 'excessive' in a smaller less expensive home. There are some very nice textured laminate products now (that do not look like your parent's old formica countertop!) which might work better in some types of homes. Some higher end surfaces scratch. If you have children who may end up cutting things and not use a cutting board, you might not want those surfaces. Some people tile their countertops. Depending on how the rest of the kitchen looks, this might make the kitchen look warmer. On the other hand, with all the grout lines, it could be a lot harder to clean--and if you already have tile on the floor, it could look distracting. Some people prefer metal countertops. This might work well in an urban loft but be totally out of place in a 'country cottage' style house. And recently, I saw a book on how to make textured cement countertops.

I would suggest going with what looks good and not a 'fad' that everyone must have. When you buy the thing that everyone must have, you instantly become a follower' who is then having to 'keep up' with something that has been created primarily by forces of marketing. I think more people should try to become comfortable with exploring their own aesthetic tastes, instead of buying a look out of a box.

I know that there is a balance between making your home easily sellable... but sometimes I think that's all some people think about when they live in their homes. When you live in a home that way, it seems like you're living in a home that is never totally yours because your design choices are constantly being influenced by the people who you think will buy it some day.

On the other hand, I suppose that if you are in a situation where you have to move frequently between houses (like every few years), then it probably makes sense to just put in some generic looking design elements that will hold a basic appeal for the broadest common denominator.

Patio or Deck - Which one adds the most value to your home?

Both decks and patios will add value to your home. which one is best for you depends on the elevation of your property in relation to the
most used floor in your home. also make smart decisions on what your new space would be used for.

Is a heated jacuzzi tub a better option for the bathroom?

Whether your plan is for an indoor Jacuzzi or outdoor, consider the following tub choices:

  • Jacuzzi whirlpool tub – utilizing Jacuzzi jets that force both air and water through pressure jets incorporated into the bathtub; for stimulating, deep-tissue massage. Select a tub with spacious bathing wells and multiple jet placements to maximize your Jacuzzi experience.
  • Air bath whirlpool - for hydrotherapy benefits produced by an airflow system that blows air through the water; creating soothing currents – gentler and more sedating than jetted bath massages.
  • Jacuzzi water heater models - heated versions of both Jacuzzi whirlpool and air bath whirlpool tubs; with blasts of heated water and heated air that increase muscle massage and relaxation.
  • Jacuzzi steam shower tub – with the same muscle-relaxing benefits of a regular Jacuzzi, but with the added benefit of a caressing stream of steaming water, pulsating through an attached steam shower head.
  • Space-saving Jacuzzi shower – instead of a bathtub.

In addition to the above, styles of tubs include the corner Jacuzzi tub, and inground pool and Jacuzzi models. Nearly all Jacuzzis can be found in round, oval, hexagon, rectangle, square, kidney, and standard bathtub shapes.

Is there a particular trend in kitchen design today?

When you realize just how wonderful a new kitchen will be, you may want to start renovations immediately. Experts suggest that you take your time planning your renovation because making changes once you’ve started can be expensive. According to a survey by Consumer Reports, "Roughly 30 percent of readers regretted not spending more time planning, learning more about materials, and screening pros."

Get a look at the hot trends in kitchen design by perusing magazines, touring model homes and showrooms, checking out the kitchens found in gourmet cooking stores, and touring impressive home kitchens in your area on local tours. Take time to reflect on how the kitchen is used and how it fits with the other rooms of the house. Start a running list of things to change or add in a renovation, and keep it in the kitchen so family members can add to it as things come to mind. Once these needs are addressed, allow yourself to dream beyond practicalities.

Set aside space for displaying a collection, such as antique yellow ware bowls or exotic baskets. Designate one wall to hold an extra-large chalkboard for family communication like the one in your childhood home. Add a small wine cooler in the space opened up when the dishwasher moves to the new freestanding island.

The good news is that many kitchen designers say that the hottest trend is to disregard trends and strive for a personalized space! With the endless combination of lighting, flooring, storage, surface, and cooking options available, you no longer need to sacrifice appearance for function.
